Diving was in Kilkee at the weekend with a remarkable sighting of a sunfish, the size of a dustbin reportedly. A very rare visitor and curiosity, the ocean sunfish is the heaviest bony fish swimming anywhere in the world. It can weight up to 2000 kgs! Typically found sunning itself on the ocean waves, the sunfish will feed on mollusks, jellyfish, fish, in fact anything it comes across that is edible. The one viewed in Kilkee on the sea bed had scratches on its side. possibly from a propellor. Other bottom dwellers were sighted on Friday night in the Whiskey Still, Dromineer to celebrate John Hoare's 30th birthday party... again. We wish John many more years of happy diving. The next club meeting will take place on Thursday 7th September. Anyone wishing to contribute to these notes please email derryo@hotmail.com or phone 086-3191673. These notes will now also be available on www.tipptatler.com on the internet links page sports section. |

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of John Kennedy, Thurles, after a long illness. John joined the club 4 years ago and learned how to dive with great enthusiasm. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. Deepest sympathies to his family and many friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam. The clubs monthly meeting was held in the Dromineer Bay Hotel on Thursday 3rd Aug. Club diving took place in Caherdaniel, Co. Kerry over the Bank Holiday weekend. There was lovely diving off Lambs Head and a fantastic night dive on Saturday with large candles used as beacons to guide divers safely ashore. Everyone had a great time and nobody got ticked off! For anyone that is interested the RNLI Lifeboat is having an open day at Dromineer on Sunday 13th Aug from 2pm to 4pm where you can meet the crew and see the equipment etc. that they use. |

Members of the club travelled to Baltimore in Co. Cork at the weekend and had some nice wreck dives. The Nestorian, a 6000 ton ship sank in 1917 loaded with steel bars and artillery shells which are still visible today and quiet interesting to look at. The top of the Nestorian lies at 14m while the seabed is 32m. Another wreck dived was the Alondra, a 2200 ton boat which sank in 1916, conger eels are visible in her boilers. The top of the Alondra lies at just 3m while the bottom on the seabed is at 26m. Diving is in Kilkee this weekend. Our monthly meeting was held on Thursday 2nd March. We are now preparing to venture outdoors again with the first of the open water snorkels taking place in Kilkee on Friday 17th March at 10am with more snorkels on Lough Derg on Sunday 19th and 26th March at 1pm. Both trainees and qualified divers must log a number of snorkels so it is important that an effort is made to do so. There are not too many nights left in the pool so it is vital that all members attend training sessions to improve or maintain fitness levels to ensure a safe and enjoyable diving season. Training is at 9pm in Templemore on Wednesdays and 7pm in Nenagh on Thursdays. It is in your own best interest to attend. Dive Medic course is scheduled for 11th March and Rescue Course for 22nd and 23rd April. A regional dive weekend is being organised for Baltimore on 15th and 16th July, early booking of accomodation if required is advisable. We are trying to update our register of members contact details, if you have not already provided yours an email or text message to derryo@hotmail.com or 086-3191673 to be kept informed of upcoming events etc. Next Thursdays lecture is on CPR, and it would be beneficial for qualified divers to refresh their skills. |
