Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club - Snorkelling
Snorkelling is great fun and offers a relaxing alternative to a dive. All you need for this activity is a mask, fins and a snorkel. A really nice time can be had pottering around in the shallows on a warm day. Often there's lots to be seen in pools and under piers.

Techniques learned for snorkelling form the basis of basic diver training, eg. body position, leg action, and water entry methods. It's where all diver training begins in our club.

Another good thing about snorkelling is that only basic equipment is needed and this gear is relatively in-expensive. See the Equipment page on this site for more information on the basic gear needed for snorkelling.

Snorkellers get busy in the springtime. Around this time club members start to get tired of the pool and with the the odd nice day, will venture to the Shannon or to the sea later in the spring. Snorkelling is a really good way to build up those leg muscles and also introduces trainee divers and snorkellers to their diving suits as these must be worn in Lough Derg in the Spring. Along with the suit the snorkeller must wear some lead weight to counteract the buoyancy of the dive suit. Therefore snorkelling is a good way to ascertain the amount of weight needed for this buoyancy compensation.

There is no age limit for snorkelling so its a good way of introducing youngsters to the dive club.
